What should I be looking for when hiring a mover?

  1. Plan early. Call Scannell Moving and Storage 6-8 weeks prior to your move date in order to discuss and set up an in-home survey. Our consultant will work around your busy schedule in order accommodate you. The earlier you start the better off you will be.
  2. Does the mover provide in home estimates or is everything done only over the phone?
  3. Is the mover you plan on using licensed, bonded and insured to operate as a long distance or local mover?
  4. Does the mover have a representative or agent in or close to your new town or city where you’re moving to? If possible, do not hesitate to visit the mover’s place of business. Many movers operate using only a cell phone or work from their homes. Check their equipment, warehouse and personnel.
  5. Can your mover provide complete door to door moving services or do they outsource moving services?
  6. Are they affiliated with a major van line? Look for brand recognition. There are generally a handful of major van line movers who operate in North America and are recognized as such.
  7. Does the mover have written literature on their moving services? If so, make sure the mover leaves a package with you in the home or request that information is sent to your home prior to an in-home survey taking place. Read all the details pertaining to the services you are looking for them to provide.
  8. Ask for references from the mover. Ask your friends, family or co-workers for any movers they may have used in the past.
  9. Do not be afraid to ask questions, lots of questions.
  10. Obtain 3 quotes from major van line agents. This will give you a good idea of what charges you can expect to pay for services requested.
  11. Ask how the mover will be handling your belongings? The type of move you are planning and the distance being travelled will determine on how long the mover has your possessions in his care. You will want to make sure that the mover you hire will take proper care of those possessions until they are delivered.
  12. Ask about payment options. Major van line movers take most major credit cards, money orders, certified cheques and cash. Van lines can also make arrangements to invoice your employer, should they be the ones paying for the move. Be leery of movers who only accept cash and do not charge applicable taxes on their services.
  13. For most moves deposits are the norm. Be cautious if the mover wants a sizable deposit or everything upfront. Scannell Moving only requires a small deposit of $100.00 on local moves. Make sure that any deposit paid is shown on the paperwork and must be deducted from your final move charges.

What is the purpose of having an in-home survey and is it recommended?

  1. In most cases an in-home survey is recommended. Over the phone surveys are conducted but are best left for those shipments that are very small in in-home surveynature.
  2. A pre-move survey taken in your home serves a variety of purposes. First, it gives you a chance to sit down with our relocation consultant and ask them any and all questions you will have regarding your move. They will explain the entire moving process, step by step, and will identify any special services you may require. This is also a good opportunity to explain to your consultant exactly what you plan on doing yourself, as part of the move process.   
  3. It will give us a better understanding of what services you will require and explain other services you may also be interested in.
  4. Your consultant will estimate how much weight you have in your home and estimate how much packing will be required, if requested.

Your consultant will view truck access and any access restrictions that we as a van line will need to know.


Can your mover provide packing and unpacking services or do I have to pack the boxes myself?

Scannell Moving and all agents for major van lines are able to provide complete packing and unpacking for cartons in your home. Considerable time will be saved by having Scannell Moving provide you with packing services. What can normally take a customer several days and even weeks to pack, we can complete in a day or two. This service is provided at an additional charge. Please speak to our in-home relocation consultant for further details and pricing.

Should you wish to consider packing the cartons yourself, you can save money. Keep in mind though; moving companies will not insure owner packed cartons on both local and long distance moves.


Can I purchase packing services but unpack the cartons myself?

Yes. Generally, if a customer wishes to unpack the cartons themselves the local destination agent will pick up the empty cartons from your home free of charge


I have decided to pack the boxes myself, do you have packing materials available?

pack yourselfYes. We will be more than pleased to make available to you the same packing materials our professional packers would use in your home. Our cartons will accommodate most everything you have in the way of boxable items in your home.

Do you offer in-transit / cargo protection for my belongings?

The short answer is, yes. Our trained, professional packers, movers, drivers and support staff will make every effort to safely move your goods from your existing residence to your new home damage free. However, in the rare event there is damage, you will want to make sure that you have protection coverage. Please find below a more comprehensive explanation of the services offered

This is an area in the moving industry that seems to get a lot of questions and there is always some confusion. Let us try to shed some light on the issue. First, movers generally do not refer to this service as "Insurance" as it may be commonly understood to be.

Second, the moving industry offers 2 services in this area for both local and long distance moves.

Local and Long Distance moves:

First offered, “Released valuation coverage”, this is free of charge to the customer. This coverage is limited though, to a maximum of $0.60 per pound per article. Generally, there is also a deductible. As an example, if an item being moved weighs 10 lbs and the item is damaged, the maximum payable to the customer will be $ 6.00 regardless of its actual value.

Should you find this coverage not to be sufficient, more comprehensive coverage is available for a fee.  Van line movers refer to this service as “Full Value Protection, Replacement Value or Valuation coverage”.

Long distance moves:

Atlas Van Lines will automatically insure your long distance shipment at a rate of $ 4.50 per pound and is multiplied by the final scaled weight. So, if your long distance shipments final weight is 8000 lbs x $ 4.50 per pound value = $ 36,000.00 worth of total value. You are welcome to increase your value to any amount you deem appropriate. Based on the above example and the fact that you may know that your goods are worth more, you may want to raise your total value to $ 40,000.00 or more.

You will need to determine the actual value of your belonging in the event of complete loss. It is also recommended that you do not under value or over value your shipment. By properly valuing your shipment you will not have any issues when filing a claim or spending money when you do not have to.

There are several deducible options that are reflected based on the premium paid. The higher the deductible the lower your overall premium will be. You can expect a zero, $ 250.00 and $ 500.00 deductible option. The higher your deductible the lower the initial premium will be. You can request any one of the above deductible options.

In the even of a claim you will want to make sure the company you hire has a comprehensive claims policy and handles the claim in an expeditious manner. Generally, most movers will have a claims settlement policy of 30-60 days. There is usually a time limitation on how long you will have to file a notice of claim as well. Speak to your moving consultant regarding their claims policy, any limitations on coverage and assistance on valuing your shipment. 

Local Moves:
  
Our Declared Value Protection option on local moves works much the same way as the long distance coverage.

You will want to establish a value on your goods while they are “in-transit”. Our in-home relocation consultant will be more than please to assist you with this if you are unable to determine the value of your goods. In the rare event that there is damage, we ask that you contact our office and request a claims form. It will be promptly sent to your new address and you are asked to complete and return the form to us as soon as possible in order to expedite your claim. We have a one time deductible of $ 250.00 for local moves.

We ask that you speak to our in-home relocation consultant regarding pricing and coverage limitations.


Are your staff trained and experienced?

Absolutely. All Atlas Van Lines and Scannell Moving staff are fully trained and experienced. Are there certain items that should not be packed into boxes, loaded onto the truck or placed into storage?

Yes. These items are generally not safe to transport along with your household goods. You can expect the movers not to pack or load these items. We ask that, if you are packing your own cartons, that you refrain from packing the following items.

  • Aerosol cans and any items with contents under pressure.
  • Propane tanks full or empty.
  • Matches
  • Batteries
  • Gasoline and containers.
  • Oils of any kind including cooking and engine oils
  • Chemicals such as paint thinners, turpentine, bleach, paint brush cleaners, etc.
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Fireworks
  • Ammunition
  • Any other liquids that can leak and cause damage to your personal possessions.

We ask that you consider moving these items yourself on local moves and giving these items away to friends, family or neighbors on more long distance moves.


I have some items of extraordinary value, will you move them?

Generally, it is recommended that items such as stamp and coin collections, legal documentation such as passports, wills, etc. jewelry, stock certificates, rare items, currency and any other important documents not be moved on the truck. Since these sorts of items are not covered for loss or damage under the cargo protection / in-transit protection plans.


Do you have services available for more specific needs during my move and if so, what services are offered?

Yes we do. Generally, moving companies will offer 3rd party services in more specific service applications. These 3rd party services offer consistently professional, timely service. Each mover will have associations with these services and have developed a relationship with each. These services will act as an extension to your existing moving service. Your mover can make all the arrangements and in most cases will be done so at a reduced rate.

3rd party services are generally performed for the following:

  • Pool table service
  • Piano tuning
  • Climate controlled plant relocation
  • Pet relocation
  • Appliance, icemaker, waterline servicing
  • Chandelier / light fixture servicing
  • Large gym / workout equipment
  • Grandfather clocks


Do you offer storage for my belongings?

Yes, we offer 2 storage options. storage

First, Scannell Moving and Storage offers  9,000 square feet of climate controlled professional warehouse storage facility conveniently located in Milton, Ontario. Our facility is monitored by 24 hour security, sprinkler protected and we have a dedicated warehouse staff responsible for maintaining the warehouse and its contents. All of your goods will be placed in one of a storage vaults which is fully enclosed and is kept 6 inches off the floor. All furniture will be wrapped in blankets and loaded into the vaults. Fabric furniture will be shrink wrapped and placed onto our upholstery racks. You are welcome to view our storage facility at any time. Do not hesitate to contact us for a site visit.

All Atlas agents offer long and short term warehouse storage services at each of our agents coast to coast. Each agent is required to adhere to very strict standards when offering storage services to our customers. This is to insure that your goods will be protected with the best equipment and only the finest of care will be taken when handling your possessions.

Second, we offer a public mini storage option. With this service, you provide your own lock and we grant you 24 hour access to your locker. Milton Mini Storage has video camera surveillance and is a fully gated complex. We offer a variety of different sized lockers to meet every self storage need. Washrooms are also provided for your convenience. We also have available on site packing materials and an array of moving products to assist with your move. As well, Scannell Moving regularly moves our customers to and from Milton Mini Storage. This option is good for those who need to move and require storage but wish to save money at the same time.

How are the moving charges calculated?

Local moving charges are based on an hourly rate. This rate is usually charged from the time we leave our facility, complete the move and return to our facility. Travel time guarantees are available depending on where you live or work and the time of year you are moving.

Long distance moving charges are based on the actual scaled weight of your goods and the distance traveled. Generally, the driver will obtain a "light weight" scale of his truck and contents prior to arriving at your home. After your shipment has been loaded the driver will return to the scale and obtain a "heavy weight" scale. The driver simply subtracts the lighter weight from the heavy scale ticketed weight and now has the actual scaled weight of your goods.

The actual weight of your shipment is then calculated from the Atlas Van Lines tariff and the actual charges for your move are obtained, this in know as the "line haul" portion of your estimate / charges. The remaining charges will be based on valuation coverage, origin and destination surcharges, insurance and fuel surcharges, storage services, packing and unpacking services, etc. All of these charges are again based on the actual scaled weight of your shipment.

Is there anything I can do to keep my moving costs down?

Yes.

First, discard items you will no longer need or use. You may find this to be a rather difficult task to complete. It may be hard to determine leading up to your move date whether or not something should be left behind or not. A good rule, if you haven't used an item for a period of one year, then it may time to get rid of it.

Second, keep away from peak moving times. Generally, for local moves, the beginning and end of each month places greater demands on trucks, equipment and manpower. These dates are generally more expensive. By planning early, you may be able to work around peak moving dates.

On long distance moves, not only are there peak seasons, but based on the amount of customers moving during a given period will also determine price. Your best strategy for keeping your long distance move cost lower is to, again, book early and avoid a move from the middle of June to the middle of September, if at all possible. As an example, your relocation consultant may be able to save you several percentage points off your long distance move costs by booking a move in March for a move that is taking place in June or July.

Consider packing and unpacking your own boxes. Many customers will acquire packing material from various sources to keep costs down. We highly recommend that you avoid using grocery store cartons because they can carry insects and may, over time, start to smell from any leftover produce in the carton. Avoid liquor store cartons as well. We suggest that you use strong standard sized cartons in order to make loading and unloading easier and quicker. If you are moving locally, you are charged by the hour for our services. It is all about time, if you do a few simple things before the movers arrive you will save money. Some helpful suggestions to keep you costs down are as follows:

  • Disassemble and reassemble your own beds. This is a standard service movers provide, but if you do it yourself, you will save time.
  • Have EVERYTHING packed in boxes and ready to go when the movers arrive. All too many times we will arrive at a home and the customer is still packing. The last thing you want to do is make the movers wait for you to get things ready.
  • Disconnect water lines from refrigerators and washers, unplug stoves and dryers.
  • Unplug floor lamps and bundle up the cords.
  • Bundle and tape groups of yard tools together.
  • Pack up the contents of desks and large filling cabinets.
  • If you have large, heavy dressers, pack up their contents into boxes.
  • Remove dresser mirrors.
  • Make sure the movers have good access to move your goods to and from the truck.
  • Remove doors if you know that they need to be removed in order to navigate a large piece of furniture out of the home.
  • Book your elevator times early.
  • Make sure there is ample truck parking at both origin and destination.
  • Get a good night's sleep the night before your move day. You are absolutely vital to the move crew, telling them where you want items placed in your new home.

If a mover goes out of their way to advertise that they move pianos, does that make them a better mover than others who do not?

No, it does not. There is a popular misunderstanding that if you hire a mover who can move pianos, then they must be better at moving everything else found in the home. I have found that more of the smaller, independent movers concentrate on this sort of advertising. There is actually more equipment on a standard moving van to move pianos than any other piece of furniture found in your home. Yes, pianos can get heavy. As a result, strong manpower will be needed. Scannell Moving has the know how and understanding to safely move pianos of varying sizes and weights. We do recommend that you have your piano tuned after it has been moved to your new home.
